Learn How to Improve your Reading Speed
Learn How to Improve your Reading Speed Learn How To Improve Reading Speed ChaptersTips To Think About Before You Begin ReadingWorking Out Your Current Reading SpeedImproving Your Reading SpeedAs we have discovered, there are two different types of readers: passive and active. Skilled readers will usually be those who read more often and are thus faster at reading without compromising on their comprehension of the text in question.Slow readers, meanwhile, are usually people who are very easily distracted and therefore find it hard to focus on the task at hand.Becoming a skilled reader is not necessarily linked to intelligence, although regular readers are inevitably going to absorb more information than those who do not read widely. Readers wishing to become better readers, whether that is in an attempt to become smarter or simply to be more skilled in the area, need to be prepared to change their approach to reading. Just like mastering a specialist subject, becoming a proficient reader also takes time, effort and practice.Do you know about the benefits o f regular reading? This could be in a quiet office, in your bedroom with music on or even in the middle of a loud shopping centre. Whatever it takes for your mind to become focused, do it.Those day dreamers amongst you need to train your brains to focus on one point. Photo via Visualhunt.comThe more you practice reading in these types of surroundings, the more ordinary you will find the process and you could even begin to progress naturally in terms of spe ed without any further intervention or training.Furthermore, learning to understand your preferred surroundings for reading can help you to work on your reading speed when taken out of this comfort zone, as you will be able to use visualisation techniques to take you back to where you would like to be, cancelling out everything else around you. It may sound 'cliché' but a big part of being a good reader is being in control of your mind, which will in turn make you sharper and more receptive each time you open a book.If you are concerned with improving the speed at which you read above anything else, consider first why it is that you wish to do so. Having a clear goal in your head can really help you to understand and grasp what it is in the text that you want to retain. For instance, it may be that you want to be a faster reader of scientific fiction, in order to take in advanced methodologies in the disciplines of biology, chemistry or physics. In this case, you might be able to skim over connecting words and only draw your attention to key terminology. On the other hand, if you are reading a passage in order to analyse it for a literature assessment, you will need to ensure you notice nuances and other stylistic tendencies of the author, and may therefore need to read slower.Reading literature fairly demands understanding of nuance!Determining your reading purpose can not only help you to work out how quickly you should be reading in order to reach your specific goal, it can also reveal that you are actually reading at a perfectly reasonable speed after all!Reading fast can have many benefits, but if you are only reading for fun then donât trouble yourself with with trying to read faster in order to keep up with friends or fellow students. Putting pressure on yourself to read at an unachievable rate can mean that your overall comprehension rate is lowered, and what is the point in being a fast reader if you take nothing away from the process?Find a goo d GCSE English tutor here.Working Out Your Current Reading SpeedNot everyone can perform in the same way when it comes to reading because some peopleâs minds are simply better tuned to taking in information in that way, however it is possible to improve oneâs reading skills by all means and to train oneself to read faster than before. The first thing you should do is find out what is an acceptable speed of writing for your purpose. For example, as previously mentioned, someone working as a researcher might be required to have a faster speed than someone who is just reading for pleasure. If you are applying for a job and they have asked you to confirm your current reading speed, then by all means use this as a benchmark. As a rough guide, eye-movement expert Keith Raynor suggests that the average college-educated person will read at a rate of 200-400 words per minute, whereas the upper limit has often been referred to as 500-600 words per minute. That being said, the scientist argu es that anything beyond 500 wpm is improbable without a significant loss of comprehension due to the mechanical process of your eye moving, fixing and processing the information which is limited by what is anatomically possible.Nevertheless, once you know roughly what it is you are aiming to achieve, time yourself to see where you measure up on the scale. It is wise to take multiple attempts to get a better understanding of your comprehension speed, and each of these should ideally be performed under calm conditions, where most people work at their best.To work out your words-per-minute, you should set a timer for one minute exactly and then read at your fastest without compromising on the comprehension of your text. Repeat the task as many times as you like to find your average reading speed. Naturally, it is vital that you test yourself when reading a text relevant to the sector which you are aiming to progress in.Reading speed is worked out by timing your word intake per minute, referred to as 'wpm'. Photo via VisualHunt.comIn the event that you have discovered your wpm rate and are happy with it, you can use this on job applications to show prospective employers the level of your reading. Or, as a freelancer, you could post this on your profile for potential clients to see.If, however, you feel that you need to work towards increasing your reading speed, there are a number of steps you can take and numerous resources which can help you towards becoming the reader you aspire to be.Does reading speed matter when you are reading poetry? The Ten Best Tips and Tricks for Learning Guitar Chords
The Ten Best Tips and Tricks for Learning Guitar Chords Suzy S. Ready to learn guitar chords? Guitar teacher Joe H. shares his secrets to mastering guitar chords The guitar is incredibly versatile accompaniment instrument. It can deliver many effects, from driving strumming to delicate fingerpicking. It is essential that a guitarist have a solid vocabulary of chords to draw from to do this. Letâs be honest for moment: There are hundreds of chords! The good news is that some are more essential than others (more on that later). The following ten tips and tricks for learning guitar chords should help get them in your head and under your fingers in no time! 1. Have a Plan When you are just starting to learn chords it is important to make a practice plan. You will want to look honestly at the time you have each week to dedicate to practicing and choose realistic goals for yourself. You may choose to try to learn three new chords a week (a reasonable goal for beginners), maybe five, or maybe even just one. The most vital thing is that you set a goal based on your personal learning style and current abilities! 2. Have Excellent Resources When learning anything, itâs very important to have reliable sources. Ask a friend or even better, a guitar teacher, for some recommendations. Most beginner guitar method books have a limited chord resource in the back that can help you begin. Once you progress beyond the basic chords however, you will definitely want to invest in a more advanced resource such as a chord dictionary where you can find just about any chord you could imagine! 3. Learn to Read Chord Diagrams Chord diagrams (a.k.a. chord charts) are visual representations of a portion of the guitar neck in which all the information necessary to learn a chord can be written. These are the most common and useful way of quickly notating chords so we can instantly relate them to the guitar. They are a must! 4. Start with Open Chords Open chords are essential knowledge for all aspiring guitarists. These are chords in which one or more of the strings are played open (without being fretted). Because we donât need to push down all of the notes in the chord it can be easier to get a clear sound as opposed to chords with no open strings. 5. Know What You Need To Know It is important when you are deciding to learn guitar chords that you know what types of chords will lend themselves to the type of music in which you are interested. For instance, styles such as folk, pop and rock will stick with mostly with open and barre forms of major, minor and some basic seventh chords. Styles such as jazz and progressive rock require a more extensive understanding and knowledge of extended chords such as major, minor and dominant 9th, 11th and 13th chords and their many variations. 6. Make Sure You Are Practicing Correctly You are going to want to make sure you build good habits when practicing chords. Just because your fingers are in the correct places does not mean you will be sounding the chord correctly. You can assess this by playing each string in the chord one at a time and listening for muffled or muted notes. If you hear a note that sounds incorrectly, you will want to adjust your fingers. Remember it is important to push the fingertip straight into the fretboard whenever possible to prevent accidentally muting strings adjacent to those intended. You can always move your thumb further down the back of the neck to help your fingers more easily hold down the upper strings at the proper angles. 7. Understand Movable Shapes: Barre Chords Keep in mind that any chord shape you learn that does not contain any open strings (barre chords) can be moved and used as the same type of chord except under a different root (The note a chord is named after). For instance, if you move every note in an F Major Barre Chord up 2 frets from the 1st the 3rd fret, that same shape now lets you play a G Major Chord. If this is lost on you at the moment, check out tip #9! 8. Give Context To What You are Learning Make sure you pick out some songs that interest you and will really motivate you to learn. Finding songs that you like with chords you havenât learned yet is a great way to stay on the path and keep yourself driving forward! 9. Learn Some Music Theory Having even a basic understanding of how chords are built will help you figure out how to play chords without needing a resource to show you. Music theory empowers you to not be just a guitarist but a full-blown musician as well! 10. Find a Great Teacher Truly the best approach to learn chords is to have an excellent teacher to teach you in a way custom tailored to you! With these ten tips in mind, remember: the secret to learning guitar chords is repetition. Try to play your newest chords at least a couple times each day or at least every time you pick up the guitar. Good luck! Looking for a guitar teacher who can help you learn guitar chords? Find Out the Secrets of the Top Music Bloggers
Find Out the Secrets of the Top Music Bloggers Suzy S. Do you have a music blog, or aspire to start one? Whether youre hoping to get into music journalism or if you simply want to publish concert album reviews for your friends, blogging is a great way to sound off on all things music. But if you want to become the next hot music blogger, youll need to get ahead of the pack. Just being a music fan isnt enough these days, so check out these industry secrets (courtesy of Mashable.com) to get you on your way 1. Hot For Teacher Yes, it seems like a rather obvious tip, but to write about music, you need to know about music â"- and not just the vinyl in your own record collection. Andrew Phillips, former editor in chief of MOG, advises: âListen to an inconceivable amount of music, especially if you donât like it. Thereâs a huge difference between being a music fan and a music advocateâ¦. The most effective bloggers (and writers) are the ones drawing from a genuinely deep well of knowledge.â And donât limit the fact-finding mission to sitting in your room like a tragically hip, headphoned Boo Radley â"- go to shows. Go to âgoodâ shows, bad shows, basement shows, loft shows, shows where the only people in the audience are you and the bartender. You never know whoâs going to be the next big thing; as Nicole Wasilewicz, senior music editor of FREEwilliamsburg.com, says, âAs knowledgeable as you may feel about music, thereâs always someone out there thatâs smarter than you and has more time on their hands. Itâs a constant game of catch-up. Also, pay special attention to opening bands.â 2. Cant Buy Me Love So youâre all studied up and ready to write. The only question is: To what illustrious publication should you lend your vast and impressive skills? Well, if youâre skint on experience, chances are that unless youâre that kid from Almost Famous, itâs going to be a while before pubs are going to be beating down your door. And with that, we bring you perhaps the most disdainful piece of advice out there: Write for free. You canât get ahead without clips, and sometimes the payment you receive for said clips is experience and a foothold in the industry. Jason Diamond, editor in chief of Jewcy.com and founding editor of Vol. 1 Brooklyn, says: âIf youâre offered to write a low or non-paying piece by a website that is influential, has a lot of traffic, or you just totally respect, take it.â Now, thatâs not to say you should keep writing, sans cash, indefinitely. But doing some writing for a website you really dig can get you exposure and, subsequently, the momentum you need to launch yourself toward a legit gig. 3. Here I Go Again (On My Own) Still, if you donât want to submit to the wily ways of âthe manâ (i.e. someone elseâs blog), might we suggest you start your own? Really, thereâs no excuse in this day and age for an aspiring blogger to not be in possession of his or her very own URL. Furthermore, once you have your own blog in place, you can either try to leverage it into its own, money-making entity by selling ads, etc., or you use it as a kind of portfolio. You can also form link exchanges with other blogs â"- just shoot the editor an e-mail â"- which will help you build connections in the space, or join a blog aggregator, like MOG. However you use it, itâs as essential for any up-and-coming music blogger to have a domain as it is for him or her to have ears. Whatever your goals may be with your music blog, make sure to have fun with it! Write about what you love and let your personality shine. Whats your favorite music blog to read? Nutrition For Teenagers To The Elderly
Nutrition For Teenagers To The Elderly Healthy Eating For Teens And Older Adults ChaptersThe Nutritional Needs Of A TeenagerThe Differences In Elderly NutritionLearn More About Nutrition For Teenagers And Older AdultsRegardless of your age, good nutrition is important. Good nutrition can help maintain a healthy weight, and can also keep certain illnesses and diseases at bay, particularly if a good diet is combined with regular exercise. However, there's no getting around the fact that your nutritional requirements do change as you get older. Just as a baby wouldnât be subject to the same diet as a 40-year old adult, so too are teenagers subject to different nutritional needs compared to older adults. As a result, itâs important to know whatâs best to eat and drink, at every stage of your life. This article highlights some key nutritional requirements of teenagers, and how those requirements differ for the elderly. If youâre looking for more information about how to make sure youâre getting the best possible nutrition or would like ideas for meal plans that help ensure that youâre getting all the nutrients you need, you can also reach out to a nutrition tutor at Superprof to find out more about healthy eating and how it can do wonders for your body.Equally, nutrition tutors at Superprof are well placed to teach you the tools needed to be more aware of how to identify healthy foods when shopping, which can make a huge difference when it comes to improving the quality of your normal diet.A balanced diet is important, whether you're considering the nutritional needs of a teenager or the diet of an elderly person. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, OpenClipart-Vectors, Pixabay)Not skipping any meals;Limiting foods that are high in sugars, salts, and saturated fats; andStaying hydrated â" usually, around eight glasses of water per day should be sufficient.A balanced diet is also crucial, with a focus on consuming a mix of proteins, carbohydrates, dairy or suitable alternatives, along with plenty of fruit and vegetables.Additionally, teenagers shou ld try and incorporate a regular exercise routine into their lives, and couple this with a good diet. Exercise can be taken in many forms, from running and jogging to brisk walking and swimming. The amount of exercise needed per teenager will likely vary, depending on factors such as whether the teenager in question is overweight, and how intensely they are able to exercise. If in any doubt about how much exercise is best, itâs worth consulting with your healthcare provider for a full assessment. For more guidance on what foods and snacks are great for teenagers, or if youâd like to learn more about the bodyâs nutritional requirements during the teenage years, you can also reach out to a tutor on Superprof for further information. Just enter your postcode to find a tutor in your local area who would be able to provide assistance, although remote lessons are also possible if you prefer to work with someone online.Unhealthy snacks should be minimised when it comes to nutrition for teenagers. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, 41330, Pixabay)The Differences In Elderly NutritionAlthough itâs important to maintain good nutrition and exercise regardless of how old you are, thereâs no denying that your nutritional requirements change as you get older. For example, while nutrients such as iron, vitamin C, and vitamin B12 can be important to teenagers, as you get older the focus tends to shift towards nutrients such as:Vitamin B12;Calcium;Vitamin D; as well asFibre.A great way to ensure that elderly adults get such nutrition, making sure that you eat foods such as fortified cereals, lean meats, leafy green vegetables, oily fish, and milk or an equivalent diary source can be a great way to work towards a balanced and varied diet. One of the main changes in the nutritional requirements of older adults is the fact that, generally, the energy requirements of the elderly tend to be lower than younger adults, due to a number of factors, such as a reduction in mobility or exercise .As a result, older adults may not need to eat as much as younger adults, and overeating may lead to issues such as being overweight. The best way to counteract such issues is to try and ensure that older adults still take part in regular exercise.Generally, thirty minutes of exercise at least five times a week is considered sufficient for older people and may help reduce the risk of health problems such as diabetes. Exercise involving strength training may also be beneficial to older adults.Additionally, consideration should be taken as to what older adults are eating, and whether itâs healthy, balanced, and in line with the energy requirements of their body.Equally, if getting sufficient nutrition becomes a problem for the elderly â" perhaps due to illness, lack of mobility, or a lack of funds, then it may be worthwhile to see whether itâs possible to have healthy meals cooked in batches and frozen, so that at least some days they wonât have to cook a meal from scratch to g et the benefits of a nutritious meal.I was treated to many recipes for healthy food in my nutrition courses!Exercise forms part of a healthy lifestyle and is very important when considering the wider nutritional needs of a teenager. (Image Source: CC BY-SA 3.0, Nick Youngson, Alpha Stock Images)Learn More About Nutrition For Teenagers And Older AdultsUltimately, the key to having a healthy diet, and hopefully healthy body, is to make sure that:You eat right with a healthy, balanced diet; You limit the number of unhealthy snacks or processed foods that you consume; andYou exercise regularly. While these key principles should be adhered to throughout almost all stages of life, it is true that exactly what we should eat and the challenges we face when looking for a balanced diet do differ depending on how old we are.For instance, teenagers may find themselves very hungry at times, which could be down to the fact that their bodies are growing or that they are especially active teenagers. In such cases, the challenge is to ensure that the teen is eating regular, balanced meals, and isnât looking to fill their hunger through processed foods or other sugary snacks or drinks.Conversely, an elderly person may struggle to get the right nutrition that they need because they arenât able to cook regularly for themselves, or they may not have the money available to buy fresh ingredients all the time.In such cases, the challenge then becomes how to find a way to make sure that the individual is still eating a balanced diet, without becoming at risk of malnourishment. Cooking in bulk and freezing food in batches is one such way that these issues can be tackled.Regardless of how old you are, the main thing is to try and make the best food choices possible and to try and maintain a healthy weight through a combination of physical activity, eating a mixture of food groups, and watching our calorie intake if we need to lose or maintain weight. This can be achieved by having a go od understanding of what constitutes a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and by having a solid nutrition education so that you can read food labels effectively at the supermarket and develop healthy eating habits that will stand you in good stead for years to come. While we all understand the importance of a healthy diet, itâs equally fair to say that many of us struggle to eat well and avoid the temptations that fizzy drinks, chocolates, crisps, or cakes may bring. If you want to improve your diet and make healthier choices but struggle to find tasty and filling alternatives to sugary or salty snacks, then you may do well to speak with a nutrition tutor at Superprof. They can provide an overview of which healthy foods are a great source of nutrition for your body, and can also work with you to come up with meal plans that will keep you satisfied and healthy, without the need to turn to junk food. After all, good eating habits can be much easier to stick to if you know how to ke ep cravings at bay while knowing how to prepare delicious, healthy foods.Check out the food traffic light system here.Read about a healthy pregnancy diet here. Now discover where you can take nutrition courses UK!

A New School 5 Tips for Parents
A New School 5 Tips for Parents A new school is a daunting prospect. Here are five tips for parents to help your children: 1. Allow your child to feel whatever they are feeling Tell your child that itâs normal to feel whatever they are feeling. Be careful not to invalidate those feelings by saying âdonât be silly, you donât feel nervousâ. If they want to tear-up, let them. Most people feel a lot better after letting off a bit of steam. Empathise with their concerns. Agree that you too would be worried about such a thing. 2. Remind your child that everyone feels just as nervous Ask them if they think any other students could feel the same way when they enter a new school. Maybe share a personal story if you have one: your first day of school or even a new job. Ask them to be kind to the other students who may be just as nervous as they are. A mission to take care of the other students can give them confidence and help them make friends much quicker. 3. Know what happens on the first day Schools often send out letters detailing the first day of term, and sometimes the entire first week. Read this with your child and write down any questions that you will phone or email the school with so you can find out the answers in good time 4. Make a plan with your child My fellow tutors and I have found that creating a wall-planner can be hugely beneficial, especially if you use this to discuss an action plan for the term ahead. Seeing the bigger picture makes the term seem less daunting and helps them plan homework and revision so exams donât âpop out-of-the-blueâ. 5. Make your the boss of their own education A student who feels empowered, and supported, in their own education will do better than one who is dragged kicking and screaming through the school year. Ask them how you can best support them in their studies. Can you remind them every evening to get their work done before watching TV? Can you get them any additional books or resources as the term goes on? Then itâs easier to say âyou asked me to do thisâ rather than coercion later on.
